We are proud to share that Dillon Harp, Survey Professional at Atwell (previously Manhard), has been selected as Young Surveyor of the Year by the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS). The award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves within the surveying profession and demonstrated exceptional commitment to serving the surveying community. This accolade is highly sought-after and celebrates both professional excellence and dedication to advancing the field.
“Surveying has been the perfect field for me,” said Harp. “I love the complexities of the profession and how it integrates history, math, law, and other disciplines. I’m a student who is always seeking to learn. However, I also want to turn around and give back to the profession by teaching others of the knowledge that I gain. I believe in doing thorough work, leaving no stone unturned, so that my clients can make informed decisions.”
Harp’s journey in surveying began at an early age. As a second-generation surveyor, he grew up in the field with his father and started working with him during high school. Now with over a decade as a registered surveyor, he has achieved significant professional milestones. Last year, he earned his Licensed State Land Surveyor (LSLS) license, and this year obtained his Certified Federal Surveyor (CFEDS) federal surveyor license. Remarkably, he is one of only two people to hold both the LSLS and CFEDS licenses.
As a professional, Harp credits several factors for his success, particularly the support he received from mentors along the way. “Stan Piper really invested in me and challenged me to give back to the survey profession,” Harp explained. “I took that to heart and became very active in TSPS.”
Harp’s commitment to the profession extends far beyond his daily work. He currently serves as Secretary-Treasurer of his local TSPS chapter and was recently elected to the board of directors at the state level. He regularly teaches seminars, speaks at conventions and symposiums, and serves as an instructor at the High Plains seminar. Harp also visits colleges to speak with students about surveying careers and mentors professionals preparing for their LSLS, Registered Professional Land Surveyor, SIT, and CST exams.
Looking ahead, Dillon has clear goals for his career and profession. “Many of the experienced, respected surveyors are starting to retire. I want to learn from them, pick up their torch, and get involved on high-caliber projects. I want to use my LSLS license on projects and to leave my own mark on the profession while continuously learning. I never want to grow stagnant.”
