Otter Tail Power Company has worked with Atwell for several years as part of its integrated short- and long-term strategy to meet its customers’ energy needs. Otter Tail Power is a regulated utility that provides electricity and generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to approximately 133,700 customers in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This partnership has included efforts ranging from conception through construction for wind and solar projects.
Project goals
To help add generation resources to meet its customers’ energy needs, Otter Tail Power partnered with Atwell to focus on opportunities in its wind portfolio. Given the efficient nature of wind and the opportunity to upgrade existing infrastructure, the concept of repowering four existing facilities over the course of 2024-2025 was formed.
One of the goals that needed to be met was aligning the project within the timeline set by Otter Tail Power. Our team leveraged internal expertise and project management skillsets to develop a plan that allowed the client to meet the desired timeline.
Outcomes
Our team supported project management and identified requirements and recommendations for project completion. These efforts included environmental research, along with assessing changes required for local regulatory compliance (i.e. setback requirements, sound impact, shadow flicker considerations, habitat and environmental disturbances, landowner approvals, and local and state-level permitting).
With a holistic view of wind repowering efforts, a comprehensive approach, and a solution-oriented team, we provided the client with integrated compliance plans and updates to achieve repowering goals.
