Expanding high-voltage transmission planning in Kansas

This work was performed for a major transmission infrastructure developer focused on expanding high-voltage networks to improve regional energy reliability and access. The client leads large-scale initiatives that support long-distance power delivery and grid modernization. Atwell partnered with the client to provide planning and environmental insights, helping advance project feasibility while aligning with regulatory expectations.

Project goals

Support planning efforts for a 345 kV transmission line segment in Kansas, contributing to a broader regional initiative designed to connect eastern and western portions of the state and improve grid reliability. The work focused on developing a 90-mile line plan, including evaluating routing considerations, resource impacts, and environmental constraints. Key objectives included assessing cost of resources and identifying potential impacts to endangered species to help inform project feasibility, siting, and permitting strategies.

Outcomes

Atwell delivered planning support that informed routing decisions and resource allocation for the transmission corridor. Environmental analysis identified endangered species considerations early in the process, helping guide responsible development and regulatory coordination.
