This work was performed for a major transmission developer responsible for delivering large-scale energy infrastructure projects across Canada. The client focuses on enhancing grid reliability while integrating environmental stewardship and community partnership into project delivery. Atwell supported the project through environmental compliance and field services.
Project goals
Support the development of a 460 km, two-phase transmission line spanning the north shore of Lake Superior in Ontario. The project aimed to strengthen regional grid reliability while navigating remote terrain and complex environmental and cultural considerations. Work included coordination across challenging conditions such as helicopter access, rock blasting, and sensitive habitats involving species like moose, caribou, and wolves. A key priority was meaningful collaboration with Indigenous communities, including supporting participation, respecting cultural considerations, and contributing to workforce development through hands-on training opportunities.
Outcomes
Atwell provided sustained support across a multi-year construction effort from 2019 to 2023, helping advance a major capital infrastructure project valued at approximately $750 million. Environmental compliance efforts supported responsible construction practices across diverse and sensitive landscapes. The project also delivered lasting community impact by supporting job training for Indigenous participants, equipping individuals with certifications and field experience as environmental compliance inspectors. These efforts contributed to long-term career pathways while supporting successful project execution across a complex and remote corridor.
