This work was performed for a regional electric transmission owner responsible for planning, developing, operating, and maintaining high-voltage transmission infrastructure that supports reliable power delivery and grid modernization. The client focuses on expanding and strengthening the electric transmission network to accommodate evolving energy demands, integrate renewable energy resources, and improve system reliability.
Project goals
Support the development of approximately 140 miles of transmission infrastructure across Michigan’s Thumb region to connect wind generation to load centers in Southeast Michigan. The project required comprehensive survey and mapping, including full corridor surveying, aerial mapping, and substation surveys. Atwell coordinated full aerial mapping and detailed topographic surveying of the proposed transmission corridors, performed boundary surveys of impacted parcels, and prepared individual easement exhibits for each parcel along the corridor to support routing, design, and land acquisition efforts. Additional goals included evaluating environmental constraints such as wetlands and endangered species, securing easements, and advancing permitting across multiple jurisdictions.
Outcomes
Atwell delivered complete survey and mapping services for the transmission corridor, enabling accurate routing and design. Our services included coordination of aerial mapping, detailed topographic surveys, boundary surveys for impacted parcels, and preparation of parcel-specific easement exhibits that supported efficient easement acquisition and project development. We supported environmental review and permitting efforts by identifying key constraints and coordinating with regulatory agencies. We also facilitated easement acquisition across the project area and helped advance critical infrastructure that connects renewable wind energy to Southeast Michigan’s power grid.
