This work was performed for a leading transmission-focused utility client responsible for developing and maintaining critical electric infrastructure across the region. As a key player in the energy sector, the client is focused on strengthening grid reliability and supporting the integration of new energy resources. Atwell partnered closely with the client to deliver survey and environmental services aligned with project goals, while adhering to all stakeholder and regulatory requirements.
Project goals
Support the development of transmission infrastructure in southwest Michigan, connecting substations in the Simpson and Batavia areas to strengthen regional electric reliability. The project required detailed survey services along the corridor, including field surveys and data collection to inform routing and design. Atwell also coordinated full aerial mapping and detailed topographic surveying of the proposed corridor, completed boundary surveys of impacted parcels, and prepared individual easement exhibits for each parcel to support land acquisition and project planning. Environmental evaluations were also conducted to identify wetlands and endangered species constraints, helping guide permitting and minimize impacts across the project area.
Outcomes
Atwell delivered comprehensive survey data to support the routing and engineering of the transmission line. Survey efforts included aerial mapping coordination, detailed topographic surveys, parcel boundary surveys, and the preparation of individual easement exhibits, which streamlined corridor development and easement acquisition activities. We identified key environmental considerations, including wetlands and sensitive habitats, enabling informed decision-making and regulatory coordination. We contributed to advancing infrastructure that enhances grid reliability and supports energy delivery across the region, aligning with broader efforts to strengthen Michigan’s transmission network.
